EQUIVALENT CREDIT FOR TRANSFERRING RESIDENTS

REMINDER!
Requests for credit for prior training in another specialty or combined training program must be submitted for approval to ABEM before a resident begins training in the EM program. The Policy on Equivalent Credit for Training in Other Specialties outlines the types of training for which equivalent credit will be allowed.
  • The amount of transfer credit allowed is determined by ABEM for purposes of board eligibility.
  • Failure to seek pre-approval for transfer credit may result in extension of EM training beyond the date that was agreed upon between the program director and resident.
  • We want to help you avoid this unfortunate situation.

BOARD ELIGIBILITY
Change to Effective Date
For purposes of ABEM Board Eligibility, eligibility starts when program director attests that a resident has completed all requirements for their residency program. This includes scholarly activities. Program completion is not the date of any residency graduation event, nor is it uniformly at the end of the academic year (June 30).

ABEM PRESENTATION TO YOUR PROGRAM
Residency Visitation Program
Every 3-4 years, residency programs are offered a no-cost presentation by a member of the ABEM Board of Directors through the Residency Visitation Program. Presenters explain ABEM's mission, guide residents through the steps to certification, and are available to answer questions. Learn more
"The members of the ABEM Board of Directors truly enjoy and look forward to making residency visits throughout the year. I feel that in-person visits put a face to ABEM and allow residents to see who we are as individuals, which allows us to interact with them in a more personal and intimate way."

~ ABEM Director James D. Thomas, M.D. (pictured above)
