Professionalism: Why it Matters

In 2021, ABEM adopted a Code of Professionalism because it “believes that patients are entitled to quality emergency care delivered in a professional manner.” The Code goes on to list specific behaviors as well as issues related to medical licensure. But do those behaviors encompass professionalism? More importantly, why does professionalism matter?

Annual Fee
The next time your certification is renewed, you will begin a 5-year certification cycle and transition to an annual fee requirement. The annual fee payment:

  • is not an additional fee; it replaces any individual activity fee (LLSA fees, MyEMCert module costs).
  • is the only fee you pay after your initial certification exams and covers all the necessary costs for your continuing certification (other than optional CME).
  • may be paid annually or in one lump sum.
  • avoids any interruption to certification.

A late fee will be assessed for annual fees not paid within the allowed timeframe.

New Modules Built To Help You!
Modules Meeting New DEA Requirement
To assist physicians in meeting the DEA CME requirement for the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use, ABEM will be launching two learning modules soon as an added benefit to ABEM-certified physicians.

Low-cost CME, thanks to the CME providers AAEM and ACEP, will be available when registering through your ABEM portal. To use these modules to meet the DEA CME requirement, you must register for the optional CME credit when you register for the free module. Learn more

Resuscitation Module
The Resuscitation module is an additional learning opportunity. ABEM-certified physicians can take the module for free, and add the option for low-cost CME.

Does Your EM Certification Expire in 2023 or 2028?
2023
Check if you have requirements to complete before December 31.

If your requirements are complete, your certification will renew for five years AFTER your current certification expires on December 31.

Your certificate’s expiration date will remain the same in your ABEM portal; it will change January 1, if you have met all requirements.
2028
For physicians with 10-year certifications, you have requirements due December 31, 2023:

Attest to 1 Improvement in Medical Practice activity
Pass 4 Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment tests

If you do not complete these requirements, you will not lose your certification, but will have the status of “not participating in continuing certification.”
