President's Message • From the Front Lines • Certification Updates • ABEM Updates
Mary Nan S. Mallory, M.D., M.B.A
The Importance of Maintaining Certification Emergency Medicine has been beset with challenges over the past year. The pandemic has stretched resources in the ED and caused burnout among staff to escalate. At the same time, ED volumes have plummeted, salaries are sinking, physician hiring is on hold in many areas of the country, all while non-physician providers are being utilized to see some of the sickest Emergency Medicine patients. These factors have strengthened ABEM’s already-robust resolve to
ensure that the standards associated with ABEM certification remain high. Certification has and will continue to greatly differentiate ABEM-certified physicians from other providers, especially in an increasingly competitive marketplace. And why? Because on perhaps their worst day, every emergency department patient and family deserves expert and compassionate care from an emergency physician, who—after rigorous training and independent verification—applies continuous learning to optimize outcomes for their patients throughout their careers.

MyEMCert Launches! The first three MyEMCert modules launched March 31. Three additional modules will be available in summer 2021. A free 5-question Demo Module is also available for physicians to register for and take to see how the modules work.
Key Advances in the specialty of Emergency Medicine are incorporated into each MyEMCert module.
When your current 10-year certification expires, you will transition to a 5-year certification cycle when you renew certification. At the same time, you will transition to an annual fee, rather than paying for each individual continuing certification activity. The annual fee is $280 for your primary certification, and $195 for any and all subspecialty certifications. This means that any third certification is free. When you pay your annual fee, you will have access to continuing certification activities.
EMS and Medical Toxicology subspecialty recertification will be moving to a module-based process similar to MyEMCert. The process will shift from a high-stakes exam administered in a testing center to modules that physicians can take from home. Like EM, EMS and MedTox will move to a five-year certification cycle and annual fee. Learn More
