2022, 2023 ORAL EXAM UPDATES

  • May 19-21
  • September 21-24
  • December 7-9

Candidates will take the Oral Exam virtually. Learn more about the current exam process.

2023 Oral Exam
There will be three administrations of the Oral Exam in 2023 (dates TBD). The structure of the exam will change to five single cases and two structured interview cases.

Structured Interview Cases

This case type (introduced in 2021) is designed to assess a candidate’s thought processes and reasoning. It’s a discussion about how a physician approaches working up a patient in the ED instead of role-playing out a case.

The examiner asks scripted questions to assess why the candidate takes certain actions, how he or she develops a differential and final diagnosis, and how to transition the care of the patient. For example, the examiner might ask “Doctor, you said that you would order a CT of the abdomen. What specifically are you looking for on CT?” Resources are available on the ABEM website to learn more about the structured interview.

2022, 2023 ITE UPDATES
2022 In-training Exam
  • Nearly 9,400 residents registered
  • Over 300 participating sites

SAVE THE DATE: 2023 In-training Exam
Tuesday, February 21 – Tuesday, February 28

The 2023 ITE administration is scheduled as an eight-day administration. The February exam will be managed using a second online portal and will require a separate login that will be sent to proctors two weeks prior to the exam. More information regarding the 2023 ITE will be provided in July 2022 when the annual survey to programs opens on the ABEM portal.

The ITE is an in-person, proctored exam that mirrors the Qualifying (written) Exam (QE). The sole purpose of the ITE is to estimate how a resident will perform on the QE. ABEM is dedicated to maintaining the current ITE format to replicate as much as possible the experience of the QE that is a high-stakes, single point-in-time exam.

Training Information Survey
Complete the survey between July 1 – October 31, 2022

  • Program Directors must log in to the survey before other authorized faculty can have access to the survey.
  • To participate in the 2023 ITE, the annual program and resident survey must be completed by October 31st.
  • Online forms are now available for easy reporting of resident training changes.

REMINDER! All requests for credit for prior training in another medical specialty must be submitted for approval to ABEM before the resident begins training in the EM program.

ABEM is pursuing providing ABMS certification for a new subspecialty of Health Care Administration, Leadership, and Management (HALM). According to the ACGME, HALM “represents a body of knowledge that addresses the system-based needs of health care environments.” The ACGME has approved program requirements for fellowship training and is in the process of developing the application. The fellowship will be sponsored at the institution level and not at the department level. Several other ABMS Boards have indicated interest in co-sponsoring this subspecialty.
